7 Things You Didn’t Know About Doughnuts

Happy National Doughnut Day! While it’s primarily celebrated in the United States, we up here in Canada can indulge in the doughnut love as well today. Jelly doughnuts, old fashioned glazed… it’s not hard to understand why this snacky dessert is a beloved staple. Lately, we’ve been seeing many restaurants looking to jump on the doughnut love – we’re seeing some fun experimentation, from bacon glaze to some quality gluten-free options, we really believe that this is a great time to be alive!

According to Wikipedia, these round guys have a disputed history. “One theory suggests they were invented in North America by Dutch settlers, and in the 19th century, doughnuts were sometimes referred to as one kind of oliekoek (a Dutch word literally meaning “oil cake”), a “sweetened cake fried in fat.” Read more here.
